Finding an Architect that’s right for you

If you’re looking to make home improvements, or thinking of embarking on a new project, an architect is an obvious choice to help with the process. But how do you find the right one for you?

While architects can be expensive, they can also be worth their weight in gold. Their knowledge and design expertise can help add value in lots of ways; negotiating building regulations and the planning process and they can also manage the project from start to finish if you want them to! They have knowledge on finding tradespeople or consultants as they will regularly come across them on jobs and they might be able to get a better price than you can on your own. As well as this, they can design a building that fits your budget and improves the energy efficiency, ultimately leading to a better sale when the time comes.

Visiting the Royal Institute of British Architect (RIBA) “Find an Architect” site is a great place to start. You can search by location or name of practice and create a short list of architects you like by viewing their work and websites. When you’ve found some you are interested in, contact them and see if they are interested in your project and what sort of ideas they have. It’s important you get on with your architect – it play a big part in the success or not of a project.

Once you have settled on an architect, a clear brief on what you want and drawing up a contract is vital. Establish how you will be paying; some architects will take a percentage of the overall build cost. Others charge a flat fee whilst some will charge by the hours they spend on it.

Your architect will send you draft plans so you can see if they’ve understood what you want. If you want these revising, they should resend you these before they are sent off to the local council for planning permission. Your architect will also have to draw up plans for your builder and building control inspector, but don’t get builders round to quote before they have seen these plans or they wont be able to cost the project!

At Tape Design, our first on site visit to view your project is free of charge. Here we can see the space and find out how you would like to use it and any key elements you want included. From here we will put a fee proposal together and, if you are happy with this, we can put together some options for your space. You can contact us via our online form, or by popping into our studio at 18A King St, Ulverston anytime to book an appointment.
